Studio DKD was first appointed by Roger Gherson following the redesign of his private residence. That relationship of trust led to an invitation to reimagine the firm’s offices at 1 Great Cumberland Place — a distinguished address at the top of Park Lane, where Oxford Street meets Hyde Park.
What began as a light refurbishment evolved into a full Category B fit-out across the second and third floors, encompassing the main foyer, staircases, hallways, and the building’s internal atrium. The project spanned thirty-eight weeks across approximately 8,600 square feet, inclusive of all furniture, fittings, and equipment.
Before a single line was drawn, Daniel personally interviewed every member of staff — understanding how they worked, what frustrated them, and what they valued. The design was rooted entirely in the lives of the people who would inhabit it.
The logistical demands were considerable. Fifty-two staff were relocated in carefully orchestrated phases, with live cases that could not be interrupted under any circumstances. Deliveries were programmed for nights and weekends to navigate Oxford Street. The internal atrium, connecting all floors, was embraced as a design asset — drawing light deep into the plan and becoming the heart of the scheme.
Security was paramount throughout, given the highly confidential nature of the firm’s caseload. Beneath the surface, significant complexity had to be resolved: a complete AC system overhaul, dilapidated duct shafts, reinforced flooring to carry the weight of archives, and the full relocation and reconfiguration of the IT server room — all delivered without disrupting the working floors above.
Through the considered use of materials, glass, and carefully preserved period details, the result is a series of light-filled, multifunctional spaces that feel both timeless and thoroughly modern — executive suites, conference rooms, and open-plan areas that speak quietly of quality and purpose.
“ Daniel, bring anyone you like to the offices. Just organise it with my PA.
